Flores Island is one of the most beautiful islands on the Indonesian chain of archipelago on Lesser Sunda Islands. This tiny long and rugged island furnished with active volcanoes in various shapes, from strato Volcano to fantastic three colored crater lakes of Kelimutu. The island is home to more than eight ethnic groups who are rich with interesting cultures. The indigenous architecture differs from one ethnic group to the other.
The program shows you the rich mixture of culture set perfectly in a beautiful natural setting. From soaring volcanoes to three colored crater lakes to traditional villages and Komodo dragons.
Exotic Flores Komodo 8 Days / Nights
Day 1: Arrive in Maumere - Fly from Denpasar / Bali (DPS)
Transfer to the hotel of your choice and free program.
Day 2: Maumere - Moni or Detusoko
On this day, you will visit Maumere market, and if the day is coincident with a weekly market day, a visit to the weekly market is included. After that, you will proceed to Wuring, the fishing village with houses built on stilts, and Ledalero Museum. Lunch will be provided en route. During the day, you will experience the dramatic change in both nature patterns and ethnicity. In the afternoon, you will find yourself in the Lio ethnic environment. You can pay a call on their villages (Lisedetu and Ranggase) and try to comprehend the local's daily life and their architecture. You will overnight in Moni.
Day 3: Moni /Detusoko - Kelimutu - Ende - Riung
It is well worth starting your day early in the morning around 4 am to experience the sunrise at Kelimutu - the three colored crater lakes. Once you arrive at the Kelimutu, you will find yourself amidst incomparable beauty unlike even photographs or films you have ever seen before. After admiring the natural wonder, you will be driven to Ende. On the way, you will pass through ravines and villages. There are chances for photo stops, such as at Nduaria Fruit Market. You will arrive in Ende and proceed directly to Wolotopo - the coastal Lio ethnic village, beautifully set with shrines and megalithic monuments. You will have lunch in Ende. Then you will have a drive to Riung in the afternoon, en route stop at Penggajawa - the blue pebbles beach. You will overnight in Riung.
Day 4: Riung - Bajawa
There is a Nature Conservation Park in Riung mainly to protect coral reefs and coastal ecosystems with mangrove forests. You will have a chance to explore the small isles offshore, which is known for their beautiful coral gardens with white sandy beaches. There is an island with unspoilt mangrove forests inhabited by thousands of huge fruit eating bats. After that, you will have a drive to Bajawa in the afternoon, en route visit some megalithic villages in the Soa area. You will overnight in Bajawa.
Day 5: Bajawa - Ruteng
Bajawa is located in the heart of the Ngadha ethnic civilization, which is known for its megalithic cultures. There are traditional villages with stone monuments, ancestor worship shrines and Adat houses. The hamlets are beautifully settled in the volcanic mountainous area. The most beautiful ones are Wogo and Bena. You will visit those villages and drive to Ruteng in the afternoon. It is another beautiful driving day. You will pass through unique villages and lush rain forests. There is an en route stop at Ranamese Lake. You will overnight in Ruteng.
Day 6: Ruteng - Labuan Bajo - Rinca - Komodo (on board)
On board Ruteng is a small town in the backbone of Flores and neighbor to the Ruteng Nature Conservation Park - the home of Ngkiong, the endemic singing birds. It is worth visiting the park early in the morning to attend nature's concert of singing birds (if there is no rain or strong winds). There is also a newly erupted volcano in the park. You can take your chance to have a closer look into it. En route to Labuan Bajo, you will stop at Cara village in Cancar area and see the unexposed world wonder, the Lingko spider web shaped rice fields. It is probably the only rice field of this kind that exists on earth. You will have lunch in Labuan Bajo. Then there is a sail to Rinca in the afternoon. Upon arrival, you will start trekking to trace the dragons. Later afternoon walk back to harbor and sail by night to Komodo Island. Dinner and accommodation will be provided on board.
Day 7: Komodo - Labuanbajo (hotel of your choice)
Early in the morning you will sail to Komodo Village to comprehend the life of the native of Komodo Island. Then sail to Loh Liang - the main harbor of Komodo National Park to have another chance tracing the dragons in the wildlife. Sail then to Pantai Merah, or the pink colored sand beach, with crystal clear water, beautiful coral gardens and plenty of tropical coral fish. It is an excellent place for swimming, sun bathing and snorkeling. You will stay there until the afternoon, and then late afternoon return to Labuanbajo. (Breakfast and Lunch Included)
Day 8: Labuanbajo - Next destination
There is a free program in the morning. Before transfer to the airport, you will visit to Batu Cermin - the cave with stalactite and stalagmite
Participant guidelines
This is not a leisure program but exploring the new frontiers in a third world country. Be prepared for the following facts:
- Lesser Sunda Islands is a newly developed destination. The facilities at most of the accommodations, restaurants and transportation are still of a very basic standard.
- Do not expect to get hot water in the bathrooms, soft and thick mattresses in all the lodges, or international standardised services in the hotels and restaurants.
Luggage: Kindly bring light baggage due to the limited space on the aircraft and land transport. It is better not to bring large suitcases but soft cover bags and overnight carriers. It is advised to pack light and appropriate clothing. It is recommended you wear sneakers or rubber soled shoes. Bring along jackets and pullovers for the visit to the high altitude destinations such as Kelimutu, Bajawa and Ruteng.
Komodo National Park: Your visit to Komodo National Park is your contribution to the conservation programs in the park. It is obligatory for you to contribute $15 USD per person as conservation fees. The fund is used by the authorities to protect the environment of Komodo National Park.
