The excavation on Liang Bua site actually has been done by a priest - Father Theodorus Verhoven SVD (Dutch Catholic Missionary) in1958. He described it as Proto Negrito possibly to comply with the "main stream" theory on the ancestors of Indonesian who are described as Proto Malaiers and Deutero Malaiers.
The controversy arises when two Australian paleoanthropoligist Peter Brown, Michael Morwood and their colleagues published their report on Nature Magazine in 2004. Since then the publicity on Homo Floresiensis has been escalating which in turn risen curiosity among people to visit Liang Bua -the location of excavation.
The cave is accessible from Ruteng - the capitol town of Manggarai. It is about 12 kilometres from the town. The cave is settled on the foot of a hill close to a small river which was ideal as a home for these ancient homo sapiens.
